Dear
Sir or Madam
Ever
since the war criminal and the last top Nazi prisoner of the Allies, Rudolf
Hess, hanged himself in Berlin in 1987, the anniversary of his death has been
used by the nazi movement in Germany, and internationally, to pay homage to the
vile racist, anti-Semitic and anti-democratic creed of Nazism.
This
year, on the sixtieth anniversary of Europe’s liberation from Nazism, thousands
of European nazis will again march in the Bavarian town of Wunsiedel on 20
August to commemorate Hess’s death and to glorify the Nazi regime he served.
Since
2001, this annual demonstration has been allowed legally to take place under
the leadership of the several-times convicted Hamburg nazi lawyer Jürgen Rieger
in Wunsiedel, where Hess’s remains are buried.
Last year, around 4,800 people, including
numerous known extremists from USA, Norway, Sweden,
Denmark, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, the Czech Republic,
Slovakia, Hungary, Russia, Austria, Spain, Italy and Croatia took part
in the march, the biggest number so far in the 18-year history of these
commemorations and marking, for the international nazi movement, the outcome of
many years of campaigning.
The Hess march has only one purpose: to give the
extremists a legal basis for their worship of Nazism. As such, it has taken on
increasing importance for their entire spectrum, uniting people of all ages,
from a variety of social backgrounds, and even rival factions, in their
adoration of what Hess and Hitler stood for.
As opponents of fascism, racism and
antisemitism, as human rights activists and as concerned citizens, we find this
shameful demonstration totally unacceptable.
Because of this, we urge you to press all responsible authorities at
local, regional and federal level in the Federal Republic of Germany to prevent
this brazen glorification of a Nazi war criminal – and the equally criminal
dictatorship that he served – to take place. Further, we ask that you make our
protests known at the highest levels.
Yours
