Workshop 3 (10.10.2000)


The workshop leaded by Karima Zahi (Committee on the administration of Justice, Northern Ireland), Boris Pustintsev (Citizen Watch, Russia) and Niki Roubani (European Network of Women, Greece) was aimed to clear up how far can we influence the governments on the topics of the workshop, by which means can be reached the mentioned awareness, how to integrate anti-racist education into professional education (so that anti-racist approach becomes one of the necessary skills of each teacher), gender perception, Children Human Right and celebration of diversity on all the levels.



Report from the NGO Forum plenary meeting on Wednesday, 11 Oct 2000
The amendments in the Draft Report from the NGO Forum made by the NGO Resource Group according to motions put by the participants were presented and discussed. The final text should be available in a few days. Good examples of practices were then explained: combating racism and exploitation of foreign workers in Spain, involving Russian administrative and law-enforcement bodies into programmes countering racism, strategiesfor improving the situation of black communities in Great Britain and a framework programme for equal integration of Roma in the Bulgarian society. Mary ROBINSON, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, welcomed the NGO Forum.

The United Nations European Preparatory meeting on Racism invited over 200 European NGOs to participate in a dialogue and make preparations for the World Conference Against Racism in South Africa, August 2001.




Interview with Koen De Mesmaeker, EU Networks on Integration of Refugees, Belgium
Koen is the Coordinator of the EU Networks on Integration. When questioned about the recommendations he responded that the revised NGOs draft recommendations have covered all their concerns. Important of those are the Labour rights, Education and, Gender and juvenile rights. They have been adequately emphasised. "I believe that nothing much will change after the conference, however what is of importance is that the NGOs fighting for this cause are gathering here. This is a source of power to find solutions to this problem. More effort is needed now so that the NGOs can achieve better success after the conference."
