Statement by Paul Mitchell from Linkswende, spokesman for the organisation .

The coalition government between the liberal Peoples Party and the extreme right Freedom Party means a very dangerous situation to all foreigners, but also students, unemployed people and trade unionists in Austria. A government of this character would introduce measureas against democratic rights, for example the right to demonstrate and limited freedom of press, as FPÖ has stated in the past. They wil use their position to broaden racism and anti-sematism. They will also introduce cuts in government spending far more extensive than the cuts that were stopped in Austria's parliament last week. They will radically change the political landscape in Austria. Defeat is not on our side; the majority of Austrian citizens is against this Liberal/Extreme Right colaition. 50.000 of them demonstrated in November, and there is a strong social movement which has been clearly heard in Austria recently. We call for unification of all those against racism: foreigners, students, trade unionists and others, and take it to the streets to make clear that the Liberal/Extreme Right coalition is not acceptable.

First call during the demonstration against the coalition of liberals and extreme right is from Julia from LinksWende:

There are about 100 people (we had to organize this demonstration in a very short time) so i actually think that's quite good. A lot of people present were not from the organizing group; they came because they're against this kind of government (meaning a coalition with the FPÖ). People carried slogans saying things like "Ausländer bleiben, Haider vertreiben", which means "Foreigners stay, Haider go away". Also important (we didn't plan this), today is Haider's fiftieth birthday so this is a special present from us.

First call during the demonstration against the coalition of liberals and extreme right is from Julia from LinksWende:

Second (and last) update from Vienna came from Paul, also from LinksWende:

One hundred people have just demonstrated against the new coalition government of liberals and right wing extremists in Austria. We marched from the university to the offices of the President. We made a small but loud and strong demonstration, the first one against the coalition between the People's Party (liberals) and the Freedom Party (right wing extreme). We all agreed that all 100 people who were there will be active in mobilizing more people next time. It was a small demonstration, but hopefully the beginning of a movement against the new racist government.
