NEWSFLASH!! THE LATEST FROM FRANCE, 16:01 CET, February 11, 2000

A French traveller guide (Le guide du Routard) is reacting to the new austrian gouvernment. Philippe Gloaguen, the founder of the "Routard", has trouble accepting Haider's raise to power. He has been wondering how to react? What could the "Routard" do? One question was bothering the Routard's redaction team : should we publish this year's edition for Austria, that is supposed to be released in april. The "Routard" has to have a clear ethical position since they inserted a new heading in each guide about Human Rights.
What to do?
It would be unfair not to publish the edition on Austria, since not all austrians voted for the FPÖ. But something has to be done...
Philippe Gloaguen did find a way to show his support to all the Austrians that didn't vote for the FPÖ, in a very symbolic way. The idea came from the color of his mood, black. The cover from the new Austrain Routard will be in mourning, without any color, just white and black, with this explanation: " We dedicate this «Guide du Routard» to all the Austrians that didn't vote for Haider".

NEWSFLASH!! THE LATEST FROM VIENNA, February 8, 2000

From Rosa Antifa Wien, Summary of the last days
A short summary of what happened in the last days. Last Saturday more than 10 000 people protested against new government. Starting at 5 pm they marched around the city and even through (!) the biggest railway station in Austria. You can hear a lot of drums and see a lot of "resistance" sprayed in the streets of Vienna at the moment. There were no troubles with the police until they wanted to arrest two sprayers. Suddenly from all sides groups of cops stormed into the demo and attacked everyone, who was not fast enough to escape. Later the situation calmed down again and the march went on to end at 3 am in front of the FPOE-Headquarter.

On sunday the (now daily) manifestation was planned to go to the inner city, where normally the Talkshow "Zur Sache" (on this day about the new government and the protests against it) of the Austrian television ORF is being held. But because of the protests the ORF decided to do the show outside of the city. But even the long distance of 6 km could not hold the 7 000 protestants away. Normal police troops staid in the background, but a lot of officers of the "Staatspolizei" (Austrian secret service) where seen. Without any reason they tried to get hold of a videocamera of some people, who document the protests. Later they even "stole" a handbag (including the keys) of one woman, and only handed it out again after a lot of people protested and after a german TV- team started to record them. On this day a lot of banners against austrian television (ORF lies) where carried, because the ORF reported a lot of bullshit about the protests, on Saturday they were talking about 1 500 protestants.

Yesterday again some 5 000 people marched through the city for some hours, now also the outer districts of Vienna are "visited"

The protests in Austria will go on! Every day at 5pm starts a march. Also there is a big international demonstration planned for Feb. 19th. We hope to see a lot of you there!

The provocations of the police got heavier and they regulary started attacks against the march. The protestors in return destroyed some police-cars and smashed windows of a prison. In the late evening the police decided to end the manifestations, which had in the mean time arrived at the FPOE-Headquarter, with a lot of violence. So they started to attack everything that looked like a potential protestor for them. Result: A lot of people injured, some arrested. Just a little appetizer of how the new government will deal with resistance in the future...

THE LATEST FROM VIENNA, day-report, February 4, 2000

Update from Rosa Antifa Wien ---- Day report, 4.2.2000

During the inauguration of the new Austrian governemnt, consisting of the conservative party (OeVP) and the extreme right wing freedom party (FPOE), massive protests were going on. At 10:30 am protestants started gathering in front of the building where the government was formerly put into duty. The govermental building was completly barred by the police. At 12 noon already 10 000 people had showed up to protest. Today the protestants were more outraged than before and threw fruits, eggs and other stuff against the police. Quite a few times it came to fights between the protestants and the police. Consequently, the members of the new government could not enter the building through the main entrance but instead had to use an onderground tunnel.

Afterwards about 5 000 protestants started a spotaneous demonstration leading along one of the main streets in Vienna causing a complete traffic jam. Arriving at the ministry of social affairs that now will be under the administration of the FPOe, 200 activists spontaneously occupied the building and put their flags and banners on the balcony. Public officials working in that ministry actually welcomed the activists. When the occupants tried to peacefully leave the building they found it looked from outside by the police. Then the door was briefly opened and some of the protestants could leave the building. All of a sudden 10 special police officers (WEGA, 80% of whom are known to symphathize with the right wing FPOe) started thrashing whoever was close to them. Because of the predominance of the opportunists the police officers backed off and most of the occupants could leave the building. But then about 100 police officers assaulted the activists in a brutal way. For example, a woman already lying on the floor was hit into the face. After some time the police finally let everybody leave the building. At this hour (10:00 pm) still some thousand people are marching through the city. In the meantime the police officially announced that they will take action against the protestants and will start to arrest people immediately.

Even though this government became reality the protest must go on!

04-Feb-2000 - 3.53 CET - By Rosa Antifa Wien (RAW)

Yesterday the protests in Vienna against the participation of the extreme right freedom party (FPOE) already started in the morning. The politicians of the peoples party (OEVP) and the FPOE where faced with spontaneous protests all the day. At 5 p.m. 3 000 protestors gathered in front of the Headquarter of the OEVP. They later went on to the office of the federal president, where FPOE, OEVP and the federal president finalized the coalition deal. The crowd was very loud and also even angrier than the day before. Afterwards the march went on to the HQ of the FPOE, where the streets where blocked by the police like before.

Later the protestors went on through the city for some hours, so fast and with spontaneous changes of the direction that the police sometimes even lost the contact to the demonstration. At 10 p.m. the march arrived at the parliament, still 500 protestors left. Then they chose to enter the Burgtheater (the most famous theater here in Austria) to stop the play and invite the audience to join the protests. Surprisingly some people in the audience reacted with standing ovations. The protestors went on, occupied a hotel for a short time and arrived at the FPOE-HQ again at 12 p.m. where they ended their march. Unfortunately at this point 1 protestor was arrested.

The passer-bys again reacted very friendly to the protestors. The protests are now also gaining more attention in the media.

On the negative side we have to correct ourselves. Other than stated before some of the names of the occupiers of the OEVP-HQ were noted by the police and so they will be sued by the OEVP.

Yesterday evening OEVP and FPOE reached a final agreement with the federal president and so the leader of the OEVP, Wolfgang Schuessel, was ordered to form a government. Today (Friday) the federal president of Austria, Thomas Klestil, will put them into duty. The more necessary it will be to show them from the beginning of their reign, that the resistance - in Austria and also intenational - will go on.

To give them a really bad start there will be a manifestation in front of the office of the federal president today at 11 a.m. On Saturday there will be another march organised by human rights organizations.

Keep on fighting!

3-Feb-2000 report by Rosa Antifa Wien (RAW)

Only two days after the announcement of the manifestation, yesterday at 5 p.m some 20 000 persons gathered in front of the Headquarter of the conservative ÖVP, to protest against the planned FPÖ and ÖVP-government. One day ago this building was occupied by 40 activists, which yesterday ended their occupation to join the demo. Although the ÖVP announced to sue them afterwards, the occupants weren't even bothered the police. In view of the 20 000 protestors outside a wise decision.

Afterwards the protesters went on to the office of the federal president (who, at least in theory, would have the possibility to not allow the planned government). This was the, by the organizing human rights organizations, planned finishing-point of the manifestation. But this wasn't enough for some of the protestors, and so one group of them went on to the Headquarters of the FPÖ, while another headed for the parliament. Later these two groups met again in the city and formed a group of 3000 protestors. The police had a lot of troubles to maintain traffic, which led to a huge traffic jam. The protestors went on the FPÖ-HQ again. This time the police tried to stop them, which led to a little fight. After protesting near to the FPÖ for a while the march went on throughout the city. At 10 p.m. the group of still 1000-1500 protestors again arrived at the ÖVP-HQ. The atmosphere was great, if not euphoric. And so they went on again and at 24:00 some 300 protestors arrived in front of the parliament, where the ÖVP was meanwhile discussing the planned coalition.

Throughout the evening a lot of car drivers showed their support for the manifestation, by joining the sound of protest with their car horns. Also the general response of the passers-by was quite good, many even joined the march.

The police reacted rather passive, but they know for sure that massive arrests could lead to international protests. Only the notorious special squad WEGA, which is known for its high (80%) percentage of ÖVP devotees, started to get rather aggressive in the end.

Summed up a great evening, especially because the human rights organization didn't manage to keep the protests just as quiet and "friendly" as they wanted to. Further actions are planned for the next days (and weeks).

Protest against Austrian departments and authorities, show them that a participation of the fascist FPÖ will not be tolerated - NOWHERE!

OTHER PROTESTS AROUND EUROPE

POLAND

By Rafal Pankowski from Stowarzyszenie 'Nigdy Wiecej'/'Never Again' Association

A demonstration outside the Austrian Embassy in Warsaw took place on 2 February. It was organized by the Anti-Nazi Group (GAN), the Youth Organization of the Polish Socialist Party, and Workers Democracy. The majority of the demonstrators were young people/students. They shouted anti-fascist slogans and handed out leaflets protesting against Haider's participation in the Austrian government. The demonstration was reported in the press and on the television. A representative of the Anti-Nazi Group was invited for a live discussion on the situation in Austria at Polish Radio 1, the biggest radio station in the country. Overall there seems to be a lot of concern about the recent events in Austria in Polish society. The topic is very much discussed in the media.

BELGIUM

Today the french-speaking universities of Belgium sent an official message to all the professors and members of the university community.

The message contains two actions, proposed to the university community. 1.On Friday, the 4th of February, all the professors are asked to pass the message below on during the lessons and remind all students of the tragedy brought by fascism in Europe during the twentieth century. 2.All the members of the university community are invited to gather in a certain place, on Friday the 4th of February, around 1 pm, to demonstrate support to democracy. At that time, the European flag will be held in all the university institutional places, in a symbolic way.

Resume of the message
The french-speaking universities of Belgium are conscious of the dangers related to the growing power of the extremist right-wing parties in the European Union. They share ideas on democracy, tolerance and on a free research of the truth. They share the aim to teach and to transfer knowledge. The European Union is a direct heritage of a peace-process in the respect of human rights. Haider's party represent all what we are fighting against. That's why we want to prevent a political and ethical regression in the European Union. The universities are ready to help those in Austria who want to introduce criticism in the political and the educational system and fight what we consider to be a crime against intelligence.

Louis Michel, the leader of the Liberal Party and the minister of Foreign Affairs, yesterday, called for all Belgians, " to not go on holiday in Austria, it would be morally wrong behaviour". Belgium will reduce contacts with Austria to the minimum. The ambassador will probably be recalled to Belgium for ‘consultation'. No political contacts will be maintained. The Belgian Prime Minister for the French speaking region(Communaute Francaise) also said that he will suspend all cultural relations with Austria.

I would like to introduce to you today a young organisation in Vienna, Austria: ZARA Counseling for Victims and Witnesses of Racism in Austria.

ZARA counsels persons who have experienced racist attacks, insults or discrimination, either as a witness or as the target of such an action and it offers advice, legal counseling, help and information. ZARA is a team of professionals specialized in assisting people individually in the process of resolving racist experiences. ZARA offers legal and other, problem-specific counsel. ZARA will support and assist victims and witnesses until the case is settled and will systematically document all incidents that are reported. ZARA also offers visits in schools and workshops. ZARAs services are free of charge.

As a group of friends (and former collegues in the field of Anti-racist work) we founded ZARA in fall 1999 because we think such a service is urgently needed in Austria. We work in our free time. We are currently offering our service 4 days a week in an office that is one room in the office of another orgnisation, SOS-Mitmensch.

We are currently not receiving any money from the State of Austria and as far as one can expect with the new government we will not receive any subsidy. (How strange and terrible that we can presuppose that you all over the world know what SORT of an Austrian government we are talking of!)

Anyways: We need members and donations!

Text-reports as they come in:

First report from the roof of the OVP building in Vienna (English) 10:14 CET

There are right now 8 people on the roof, holding banners against racism and against the new coalition. The demonstrators are actually stuck on the roof because the police locked the ground door. About 30 persons are downstairs, but they can't get inside the building. The demonstrators have phone contacts with the outside to keep informed of all the possible developments.

About 500 people demonstrated yesterday around 11 o'clock in front of the parliament building. They shouted in anger against racism and the new coalition. The police arrived but had trouble to handle the situation, as far as they are not used to be confronted in such situations.

The demonstation is going to continue this afternoon. The roof-occupation will keep on going. The demonstrators have enough food to last a long time and they will stay and occupy the building as long as they can. They will soon decide if they will start a noise & sound action to bother the building tenants, members of the ÖVP party.

Second report from the roof of the OVP building

There is about 5 camera-teams reporting the demonstration on the roof. The demonstrators are standing, holdings banners and shouting slogans.

One hour ago they received a call from someone downstair, organizing the afternoon demonstration. A lot of people are coming spontaneously and want to do something to show their anger. All those people want to demonstrate this afternoon. According to the reporter there are going to be at least a few thousand people there. The police is getting ready.

Paul Mitchell's report

Since the occupation of the OVP building, small groups of demonstrators are permanently active. Yesterday evening, at about 10 o'clock, a spontaneous massive demonstration occured in front of the parliament building. Four hundred people, mostly students, not organized people, were screaming their anger about the new gouvernment. They were screaming sentences like "Haider is a fascist". They are not ready to accept a right wing party in the gouvernment.. They think that Schuessel would do anything for power and that he can be bought. The demonstrators were around the governement for more than a hour. They apparently succeedded in preventing the politicians from coming out of the building. Afterwards the streets were blocked and the demonstration continued until 2 o'clock and caused traffic chaos in the streets around the gouvernement districts. Right now there are demonstrators in front of the President's office. They seem to be gathering spontaneously again. Police is getting ready to protect people's party headquarter against the demonstration this evening. People's party leaders are meeting at around the same time that the demonstration is planned. There is really a spontaneously massive mouvement.

8

Live report from the roof

There are still people standing on the roof. The demonstartion keeps on going on. (we can hear the peolple shouting). Most of the demonstrators are young people. The police's presence is not strong nearby the roof. Now a lot of people are coming from all directions, with banners. The demonstrators are planning to leave de roof in few minutes and to join the people in the streets.

Downstairs from the roof into the demonstration.

We talked to Fahim just before the group on the roof of the OVP building lead that demonstration downstairs to the presidential palace : "There are about 8000 people standing out there, they are banging their keys in protest against Schuessel (which means key in german). We are right now stepping through a window into the building to go outside. The building is actually empty and we are facing a lot of closed doors " As the group stepped outside, they were greeted by the crowd. Fahim had to hang up as the noises became so loud that he couldn't shout over it. We will get back to him later.

We're talking to Paul Mitchell, live from the demonstration in Vienna. Paul how are things going?

The demonstration has officially finished, but a large number og people are all moving in the same direction and i suspect that they are moving somewhere else. I'm not sure where they are going, but i think they're possibly heading for the headquarters of the Freedom Party. We'll be following them anyway, they seem to know where they are going.

Any police present so far?

The police are very, very low key. I can see two policemen standing outside the president's office, and apart from that absolutely nothing. The demonstrators are very angry but they are not going to be violent.

We saw a lot of policemen around the presidential office earlier on German television, when Haider en Schuessel were coming out.

I was there when Haider came in; there were not many demonstrators at this point. He drove his car straight towards me (at least his driver did). I found myself blocking his car without even intending to do so. He went inside the presidents office. There were a lot of policemen, not really a danger of violence, just a lot of vocal anger.

What do think of Haider's party getting the department of justice?

Well that's a disaster. He's a person who abuses the justice system to his own end, for example he sues his political opponents every week. He's using lawyers to silence the opposition. If you say 'Haider is a fascist' in Austria, you will be sued and can loose your savings ans there is nothing to stop that. Senior people, who are responsible for justice policy within the FPOe are on record of making up racist statements. One of their legal spokesmen said for example that all Africans are agressive by nature. She may be the new minister, she was in discussion for it. Another legal spokesman boasted that he had concentrationcamp souvenirs in his house. This sort of people are going to be in the justice department. It's not a very happy thought.

To the international community

Declaration of the Austrian antiracist movement

In this moment of Austrian history we are deeply concerned with the political developments in our country. For more than 10 years, many NGOs, initiatives and smaller parties have tried to change the austrian racist reality without success.

In the new millenium, Austria still is not a democracy but a national democracy. More than 10 % of our population is systematically denied all political rights and participation, often even for decades, they are kept in the status of "foreigners". Even in the trade-unions, there are no equal voting rights for all workers and employees. This system, guaranteeing equality not to human beeings but to citizens only, is unique in Europe. Since a democratic system has been imposed on Austria after World War II, not only the conservatives and the right wing, but also the governing social democrats fortified this system of nationalistic and racist segregation and exclusion. This lack of balance in the political system led to the uprising of a party that is openly promoting a revision of Nazi history, using racism as an effective political tool due to the lack of a counterveilling power.

Even the killing of Marcus Omofuma during his deportation on May 1st 1999 did not lead to any antiracist measures. On the contrary, police action, especially against people with African background, increased drastically. Charles O., major activist, writer and poet from Nigeria, was even accused of being a drug-boss and imprisoned for 3 months, before he had to be released due to complete lack of evidence and major charges were dropped. Nevertheless these practices led to significant intimidation of the Black communities in their political campaigning.

Under such unfair conditions of criminalisation and the lack of democratic rights, we welcome initiatives from the side of the international community that put pressure on Austrian representatives. Austria is facing a drastic swing to the right. With a right-conservative government things will even get worse for people discriminated on grounds of racism, including the Jewish minority, as well as for people discriminated on the grounds of sexual orientation, sexual identity or on the grounds of being physically handicaped.

For some years now, Austria is known in the European Union for its attempts to radically alter the politics towards a demontage of the Geneva Convention and the denial of asylum for refugees. Austria has become the home-base for right-wing policies, threatening emancipatory movements all over Europe. Therefore it is in the self-interest of all democratic powers in Europe to try to reverse the political currents in Austria. We want to encourage all international steps in this direction, hoping that the European Union at least has learned from history, while the official Austria has not.

Under any government to come, Austria should finally change towards a fair democratic system which includes the right to vote for all permanent inhabitants, in which there is an anti-discrimination-law with respective enforcement, in which immigrants are not treated as enemies and in which human rights are really respected.

Platform for a world without racism
