We all knew that this conference against racism would be a contentious one – one with varying opinions and viewpoints. However, we all came here to address these situations and to alleviate racism through a participatory process – to make sure that when issues concerning our societies are brought forth – we are here, in Durban – to stand up for our beliefs.

As we all know, the United States Delegation pulled out of this process, only days after it arrived. We have all seen the repercussions of such an action – political upheaval and a denial of victims of the world to have their concerns and needs properly addressed.

The United States has an obligation to address the issues of racism and its effects. This obligation extends not only to one country, or even just to its own citizens – but extends to all members of the human race on a global scale.

Governments need to realize that their actions affect the lives of members of civil society –from the way we live to the way we die. By denying the NGOs here and civil society at large – from proper and inclusive dialogue, the United States has managed to further marginalize victims of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

At this moment, the governments of the world are sitting in the ICC and have become stalled on the decisions they should be making. This conference is not about one issue – as timely as that issue may be. This conference is about the global scourges of racism that affect millions of people daily in every conceivable aspect of life This conference is about the denial of basic and fundamental human rights for all victims of racism - and no country, no NGO and no individual has the right to prioritise which forms of discrimination are the worst.

As NGOs we need to unite from all aspects. When one of us is discriminated against due to our race, religion, sexual orientation, colour, language, nationality, physical disability or other category – we are all affected! We need to work together, because I refuse to believe that we cannot accomplish common goals – to rid the world of racism and to find tolerance for our differences.
